Safe Spaces for Healthcare Professionals
What is a Mwangaza Lounge?
'Mwangaza' means Light in Swahili. These are dedicated, custom-designed well-being
rooms located directly within hospital environment.
Mwangaza Lounges will act as both a training ground for professional interpersonal skills and a confidential, accessible space for counseling, mental health resources, and emotional recovery.
Why Hospitals in Kenya Need Them Now
- High-Volume Pressures: Nurses in Kenya?s Level 4, 5, and 6 public and mission hospitals face intense workloads, severe understaffing, and daily exposure to trauma.
- The Burnout Crisis: Without a space to process clinical stress, frontline workers experience alarming rates of emotional exhaustion, anxiety, and moral injury.
- Systemic Resistance: "Resilience" cannot simply mean demanding that nurses absorb more system pressure until they break; the hospital system must offer structural support.
- Dignity for Providers: It shifts the focus from individual coping to institutional care, recognizing that a well-supported workforce is the foundation of healthcare.
